Both the Norwegian Maritime Directorate and the Ship Registers are part of the Government's strategy to maintain Norway as a leading maritime nation. A large fleet flying the Norwegian flag has significance in many areas such as Norway's influence in international organizations. Despite the financial crisis and the phasing out of ships during the last year, the NIS-fleet has experienced a positive increase in recent months.
