Security notification for Somalia area 04.01.2009
Due to increased piracy activity, especially in the southern part of Somalia, NIS/NOR vessels shall remain their operations on security level II until exceeded longitude S 04. NIS/NOR vessels are also advised to operate at last 600 nm. distance from Somalia coastal line.

When a Norwegian-owned vessel is captured, it is the vessel's flag which decides Norway's assistance.
According to the flagstate-principle, the flagstate has the jurisdiction over the vessel and the shipowners must deal with the flag with which the vessel is registered.
When Norwegian citizens are affected by piracy on board a ship under a foreign flag, Norway will contribute with consular assistance in consultation with the actual flagstate.
